This painting was made on John Stobart's back deck. I was absorbed in the work and had no idea he was watching — he was inside at his drawing table, working on a ship drawing, and quietly photographed me as I painted.
I only learned about the photographs afterward. It remains one of the most meaningful records of my time painting alongside one of the great maritime artists.
