Marine Paintings

Classic yachts, tall ships, and working vessels on New England waters

A great yacht under sail is one of the most beautiful things a human being has ever made.

Marine painting has a long and serious tradition in New England, and I came to it with a great deal of respect for what had been done before me. The work of John Stobart — who became a friend and mentor — set a standard for historical accuracy and atmospheric truth that I have tried to honor in my own way. His paintings taught me that a ship is not merely a subject but a character, with its own history and presence, and that the sea around it must be painted with equal care.

My marine subjects are drawn primarily from the classic yachts and working vessels of New England waters — the great schooners and gaff-rigged sloops that raced off Newport and Marblehead, the fishing draggers and lobster boats that worked the Cape Cod harbors, the tall ships that still gather at Mystic and Gloucester. I am drawn to vessels that carry a sense of history, that look as though they belong to the water rather than sitting on top of it.

The technical demands of marine painting are considerable. Water in motion is among the most difficult subjects in oil — it has no fixed form, only behavior. I spend a great deal of time studying how waves build and break, how a hull displaces water, how spray catches the light. The goal is not photographic accuracy but something more like physical truth: the painting should feel wet, should have weight and movement, should make the viewer sense the wind.

Many of the marine works grew out of the Super Yachts series, in which I paired paintings of the great racing yachts with written notes about their history and character. That project deepened my interest in the relationship between a vessel and the sea it sails — a relationship that is always, in some sense, a contest. The best marine paintings, I think, capture that tension: the beauty of the thing and the power of what surrounds it.
